License Plate Recognition at a Gate: What It Reads and What It Misses

Plate recognition is the most requested and most misunderstood thing we install at community and commercial gates. Boards ask for it as a feature. It is not a feature. It is a dedicated camera doing one job, and it fails when any part of the setup is compromised.

Why the entrance camera you already have will not do it

A camera showing the whole entrance is set up for a wide scene at moderate exposure. A plate is a small, retroreflective, moving object, frequently at night, often behind headlights. Those requirements pull in the opposite direction from a general overview shot.

Plates need their own camera, aimed at plate height, with exposure set for the plate rather than the scene.

What actually determines whether it works

  • Angle. Roughly head-on. Past about thirty degrees off axis, character recognition degrades quickly.

  • Speed. Vehicles need to be slowed. A gate helps. An open entrance at 25mph does not.

  • Lighting. Headlights at night are the biggest single problem, and dedicated IR aimed at plate height is usually the answer.

  • Distance and lens. One camera per lane, per direction. A single camera covering two lanes will do neither well.

  • Mounting height. Too high produces a foreshortened plate that reads poorly.

Both directions, and why boards forget

Inbound tells you who came in. Outbound tells you what left. Communities routinely fund inbound only, then need outbound after an incident involving a stolen vehicle or a contractor dispute. Budget both from the start if you can.

What LPR will not do

It will not read a plate obscured by a bike rack, a trailer hitch, a dealer frame that crops characters, mud, or a plate that is simply missing. It will not identify the driver. And it does not tell you a vehicle was stolen unless you are subscribed to a list service and have the legal basis to use one.

It also is not evidence of who was driving. That distinction matters when a board wants to act on a reading.

The surge exposure nobody plans for

A gate camera sits at the end of the longest cable run on most properties, frequently underground, alongside the reader and often an intercom. It is the most common storm casualty we replace. Ethernet surge protection on that run costs a fraction of the hardware at the end of it.

Realistic expectations

A properly specified, correctly aimed LPR camera at a controlled-speed gate reads the large majority of plates that pass it. It does not read all of them, and any installer promising complete accuracy is overselling. What you get is a searchable record that turns a vague incident into a specific timeline.
