Choosing the right security camera for your home or business can be overwhelming. With so many resolutions and brands to choose from, it's tempting to leave the decision up to your installer. But understanding the difference between camera resolutions—especially 4MP (2K) and 8MP (4K)—can help you make a more informed investment.
What Do Those Numbers Mean?
2MP (1080p Full HD) – Considered the baseline standard today.
4MP (2K) – A step above, offering greater detail and clarity.
8MP (4K) – The highest clarity in most common systems, offering exceptional image quality.
But do you really need a 4K (8MP) camera for your home or business?
Let’s take a look.
Try It Yourself: Can You See the Difference?
Below are two side-by-side clips:
One recorded on a 4MP camera
The other on an 8MP camera
Watch them closely—can you spot the difference?
At first glance, they might look similar. Most people won’t notice much difference unless they look at the finer details—like small lettering on a wall or a logo on a vehicle.
Now Let's Zoom In
Here’s where the resolution really matters. In these next two clips, we digitally zoom in on the same area of each video.
Notice how the 8MP camera maintains more clarity. You can still read the text or identify a logo, even when zoomed in.
Real-World Example: Why It Matters
Imagine you have a security camera at your business entrance. Someone walks in with a visible tattoo. With a 2MP camera, you might see the tattoo’s outline—but not the details. With a 4MP camera, it’s better. With an 8MP camera, you’ll likely be able to zoom in digitally and clearly see the tattoo.
The same applies to reading license plates, spotting faces in crowds, or identifying a person at a distance.
However, distance and camera placement play a big role. If a car with a logo is parked just 10 feet from the camera, even a 2MP camera will likely capture it well. But as that car moves further away, the logo and any text will begin to blur—first on the 2MP, then on the 4MP, and finally on the 8MP, depending on how far it goes.
So Which Camera Should You Choose?
We typically recommend:
2MP Cameras – Budget-conscious jobs or low-priority zones
4MP Cameras – Great for small to mid-sized areas with decent detail
8MP Cameras – Ideal for large areas or situations where zooming in is important
For example:
A small hallway might do just fine with a 4MP camera
A large parking lot or warehouse might benefit from an 8MP camera for better coverage and zooming capabilities
But here's the truth: not all cameras are created equal. Some 4MP cameras actually outperform certain 8MP models due to better sensors, image processors, and lens quality.
The Bigger Picture: Resolution Isn’t Everything
The resolution is important, but it's not the only factor that affects video quality. Here's what else matters:
Camera brand and sensor quality – A cheap 8MP camera may perform worse than a premium 4MP camera
Cable quality and installation – Poor wiring can lead to laggy video or dropped frames
Lighting conditions – Cameras with better low-light sensors perform better at night, regardless of resolution
Recorder settings – If your NVR isn’t configured correctly, even a great camera won’t look its best
