The Lightning Strike That Kills Your Cameras Never Hits Your House

Every August we replace equipment for people who tell us the same thing: the house was fine. No scorch marks, no blown breakers. The TV still works. But the recorder is dead, the switch is dead, and four cameras on one side of the property have gone dark.
The strike did not hit the building. It hit near it. And it got in through a cable nobody thinks about.
Two doors, and most people only lock one
A surge needs a conductor, and your camera system offers two. The power line is the one everyone knows. Plug the recorder into a surge protector and you have addressed it.
The Ethernet run is the one almost nobody protects. Every camera is connected to the recorder or a PoE switch by a copper cable that often runs outdoors, sometimes underground, sometimes a hundred feet to a detached structure. A long copper run behaves like an antenna. A strike landing nearby induces a voltage on that cable, and the surge travels straight into the PoE switch, then through the network into the recorder.
Why South Florida specifically
Central and South Florida sit in one of the most lightning-active regions in the United States. Add a wet season running June through November with near-daily afternoon storms, and the exposure is simply higher here than almost anywhere else a camera system gets installed.
Where we see it most
Detached buildings. A garage, pool house, guest house, barn or workshop. The run between structures is the exposure.
Gates and entry points. Often the longest run on the property, frequently underground, usually carrying an intercom or plate reader.
Pole-mounted and perimeter cameras. Acreage properties running cable across open ground to poles.
Anything with an outdoor antenna or wireless bridge.
By contrast, a townhouse with six cameras on short runs under one roof is comparatively low risk. Not zero, but the difference is real.
What a surge event actually costs
The reason this matters is not one camera. A single event tends to take a chain of connected equipment: the PoE switch feeding the run, the recorder it connects to, and the cameras themselves. It typically happens during storm week when every low-voltage contractor in the tri-county area is already booked.
Insurance is often unhelpful here. Losses of this size frequently fall below a homeowner deductible, and lightning claims are commonly disputed. Manufacturer warranties do not cover it either, because surge damage is classed industry-wide as an external event rather than a defect.
What actually helps
Protect both paths. Power surge protection at the recorder and switch, and Ethernet surge protection on outdoor and inter-building runs. The second is the gap on most existing systems.
Ground it properly. A surge protector that is not correctly grounded has nowhere to send the energy. This is where a licensed low-voltage contractor matters more than the hardware brand.
Know when something fails. Partial failures are effectively invisible. If a switch feeding four cameras dies, your app still opens and still shows the other cameras. Nothing looks wrong.
Be honest about what it does. No device prevents every surge, and a direct strike to the structure is a different event with a different outcome. Protection meaningfully reduces the odds and the blast radius. It does not make a system lightning-proof.
The season is the deadline
Whatever you are going to do about surge protection, mounts, seals and drainage, do it in April or May. Once the season opens, availability tightens and you are competing with everyone who waited.
