Installing a Burglar Alarm the Proper Way

One common misconception we often hear is: “I have impact windows, so I don’t need an alarm system.” While impact windows are a great investment, they were never designed to stop burglars—they were made to withstand hurricanes.
What Are Impact Windows Really For?
Impact windows and doors are built to resist high winds and flying debris during severe weather. They’re tested to prevent objects from penetrating your home during hurricanes—not to stop someone determined to break in.
Thieves don’t follow storm rules. They can use tools, time, and leverage to quietly force open or bypass impact windows. That’s why an alarm system remains a critical part of securing your home or business.
The Right Way to Install a Burglar Alarm
An alarm system is only effective when it’s installed the right way. To properly secure your property, here’s what we recommend:
✅ Door & Window Sensors
Install a sensor on every door and window that leads to the outside. These sensors detect if the entry point is opened while the alarm is armed.
✅ Motion Detectors
If you have non-impact windows, motion detectors are a must. They detect movement inside your home and act as a second layer of defense if someone gets in.
✅ Glass Break Detectors
These are great for regular (non-tinted, non-impact) glass windows. They trigger the alarm when they detect the sound frequency of breaking glass. However, they don’t always work with tinted windows, since the shattering sound may be muffled.
⚠️ Impact Sensors (Use With Caution)
Impact sensors can detect vibration or force, but they tend to cause false alarms during thunderstorms or construction. We recommend using these only when absolutely necessary and in areas prone to physical tampering.
Keep It Simple. Keep It Secure.
Protect every exterior door and window with a contact sensor.
Use motion detectors in key areas, especially near vulnerable windows or entry points.
Add glass break detectors only on non-impact, non-tinted glass.
A properly designed alarm system works with your impact windows—not instead of them. The goal is to make sure any unauthorized entry triggers an alert, no matter how they try to get in.
